Greek Left Coalition Accuses Mitsotakis of Lacking Seriousness and Showing Arrogance at Thessaloniki Fair

The Greek Left Coalition accused Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis of showing a “lack of seriousness” and an “excess of arrogance” after his news conference at the Thessaloniki International Fair.

The party’s spokesperson, Theoni Koufonikolakou, said Mitsotakis had presided over an unprecedented decline in Greeks’ purchasing power and had pushed the country deeper into corruption. She argued that most citizens believed they had more money in their pockets in 2019, despite the memorandums, than they do today, eight years after Greece emerged from the crisis.

Koufonikolakou also criticized the prime minister’s remarks on debt protection and inequality. She said social protection for borrowers affected by the crisis should not be confused with policies for strategic defaulters. She further accused Mitsotakis of trying to rewrite the causes of Greece’s bankruptcy by arguing that the country had been led there by putting people before numbers.

Instead, the opposition statement blamed the economic and productive model supported by Mitsotakis and his party. It said his ironic attacks on political opponents, especially former prime minister Alexis Tsipras, exposed arrogance, a lack of arguments and political irritation.

The spokesperson concluded that Mitsotakis now knows he has a rival and that the next election will not unfold as he had imagined.
