Green Hell King Returns: VW Golf GTI Edition 50 Sets New Nürburgring Front-Wheel-Drive Record

The Nürburgring's "Green Hell" has once again witnessed an intense battle for the fastest front-wheel-drive production car, with Volkswagen emerging victorious. The new VW Golf GTI Edition 50 has set a blistering lap record of 7 minutes and 44.523 seconds, narrowly beating the previous record holder, the Honda Civic Type R, by less than a second. This achievement reignites the fierce competition between German, Japanese, and French performance engineering.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the iconic GTI badge, Volkswagen introduced the special Edition 50 model. This performance variant features sportier bumpers, a blacked-out styling package, unique "GTI 50" badging, and a larger rear spoiler. It rides on 19-inch alloy wheels with red brake calipers and upgraded ventilated brake discs, enhancing its aggressive stance. Inside, classic GTI elements like red and green stitching and tartan sport seats are present, complemented by "GTI 50" door sills, red metal pedals, and a steering wheel with commemorative badging, all designed to create a passionate driving atmosphere.

Under the hood, the Golf GTI Edition 50 is powered by a 2.0-liter TSI turbocharged gasoline engine paired with a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission. It delivers an impressive 325 horsepower and 42.8 kgm of torque, enabling a 0-100 km/h sprint in 5.3 seconds and a top speed of 270 km/h. The car comes standard with DCC adaptive chassis control and a special "Special" Nürburgring track mode, which optimizes the chassis, steering, and dynamic control systems for the demanding circuit. An optional GTI Performance package further enhances the chassis, exhaust, and wheels, contributing to its record-breaking lap time.

Volkswagen has officially launched the Golf GTI Edition 50 in Taiwan with a starting price of NT$1,948,000, with the initial batch of 100 units sold exclusively online. This record-breaking performance solidifies the Golf GTI Edition 50's status as the most potent GTI to date, reclaiming the front-wheel-drive crown on the Nürburgring.
