Green Party deputy leader linked to rental properties despite opposition to landlords

Mothin Ali, deputy leader of the Green Party, is linked to two buy-to-let properties in Leeds through a company he controls, despite his party’s opposition to private landlords.

Ali is the sole director of MA Holdings, which was incorporated in December 2021. Companies House records list him as the sole person with significant control, holding more than 75% of the shares. The company bought one property in June 2022 and another in March 2025. Both purchases used buy-to-let mortgages, although Ali does not appear to profit from either property.

The purchases took place before Green Party delegates adopted a policy in October 2025 committing to phase out ownership of rental properties by private landlords. The policy describes the private rental sector as a vehicle for wealth extraction and calls for its effective abolition alongside a major expansion of council housing. It also proposes rent controls, an end to buy-to-let mortgages, higher regulation and taxes on private rentals, and powers for councils to buy rental properties at a discount when they are sold.

Abolish landlords

The connection between Ali and the properties, through MA Holdings, was first reported by the Times. The BBC spoke to the previous owner and resident of the second property, who confirmed that Ali’s company had bought it and believed it was intended to be rented out.

The private rental sector has failed, it is a vehicle for wealth extraction, funnelling money from renters to the landlord class.

A Green Party spokesperson said the party had provided the BBC with deeply personal information showing that Ali “has acted solely in the interests of vulnerable close family members for whom he has caring responsibilities.” The spokesperson added that the information would not be made public at Ali’s request, to protect his family. The BBC said it was also withholding the information because it concerned private family matters.

The effective abolition of private landlordism and the private rented sector, coupled with the mass expansion of council housing, is the only way to end the housing crisis.
