Greenpeace activists charged after hanging banner at Danish agriculture group

Six Greenpeace activists face charges after unfurling a large red banner from the headquarters of Danish Agriculture & Food in Copenhagen on Thursday morning. The banner declared, "Here begin the dead fjords."

Copenhagen Police were alerted to the demonstration at 7:12 AM. Officers were on the scene until 12:05 PM, by which time all six activists had voluntarily descended. They began removing the banner shortly after 11 AM.

We were finished down at the site here at 12:05 PM. All six demonstrators came down voluntarily.

The activists are charged with violating public order regulations for not complying with police orders and for infringing on the peace of the home, according to police duty officer Anders Frederiksen. No one was taken into custody, and Frederiksen described the event as having proceeded calmly.

They are charged partly for having violated the public order regulations, as they did not comply with the police's orders. And partly they are charged for having violated the penal code's provision on violation of the peace of the home.

Greenpeace stated in a press release that ten activists participated, with several climbing to the roof to hoist a red flag symbolizing dead fjords. The organization described the flag as a new warning about oxygen depletion and dangerous underwater conditions, noting it has been displayed in several Danish locations recently.
