Greg Abbott allocates over $2.5 million in scholarships for rural students in Texas: 'They deserve access'

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has allocated more than $2.56 million in grants to bolster educational opportunities for students in rural areas. The funding will support 17 partnerships between school districts, enabling them to plan, implement, or expand university and job training programs focused on high-demand employment sectors.

This initiative is part of the state's Rural Pathway Excellence Partnership (R-PEP) program, designed to foster collaborations among rural school districts. The goal is to broaden access to college and career pathways that might be difficult for individual schools to offer alone. Governor Abbott stated that the program aims to guarantee that young people in rural Texas receive the same educational opportunities as those in major cities.

"Students in rural Texas deserve access to high-quality university and professional programs," Abbott said. He further noted that these partnerships will prepare students for well-paying jobs and contribute to the economic development of rural communities. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) explained that the funding will be distributed across the selected partnerships to enhance educational access and career readiness.

Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath highlighted that Texas has the largest rural student population in the United States. "These grants represent a concrete example of Texas's commitment to rural school systems and the communities they serve," Morath stated. The R-PEP program, established by House Bill 2209, is designed to prepare students for careers in high-demand fields and support their academic success beyond high school, ensuring they have the tools to thrive in the state's evolving economy.
