Grief and questions linger after deadly shooting in Stade

Grief and disbelief have gripped Germany following a violent incident in Stade, where hundreds gathered to mourn six individuals killed in a shooting at a youth welfare facility. The victims included two women and a man who were employees of the facility, and two women and a man from the regional youth welfare office in Hannover.

The attack occurred during a meeting concerning child custody. Authorities allege the 45-year-old suspect, a Turkish national, suddenly opened fire with a weapon he brought to the facility. Five victims died at the scene, while a sixth succumbed to injuries in the hospital. The suspect fled the scene in a car driven by a 65-year-old woman, who has since been released from custody after questioning.

The Hannover public prosecutor's office had previously initiated an investigation against him on suspicion of threats. He allegedly acted aggressively and made verbal threats towards doctors at the Hannover Medical School in April, following an incident involving his daughter's treatment for shaken baby syndrome.

The perpetrator is currently in custody, facing six charges of murder. The incident has sent shockwaves across the country, prompting widespread mourning and calls for reflection on the security of social welfare institutions.
