Groom's Remarks Lead to Wedding Being Called Off in Bangladesh

A wedding in Brahmanbaria, Bangladesh, was abruptly halted, with the bride's family calling off the ceremony due to the groom's alleged inappropriate behavior and remarks. While initial reports circulating on social media suggested the incident stemmed from the absence of mutton at the feast, accounts from the bride's family and local residents point to a more complex dispute. According to Shafik Mia, the bride's father, the wedding was canceled after the groom, Md Junaid, made objectionable comments during the reception. Junaid, who resides in Japan, reportedly argued about the lack of mutton in a traditional dish called "khador." When his family attempted to mediate, Junaid allegedly told his brother to "marry the bride" instead and stated he would never visit his in-laws' home. Mia, overhearing these remarks, decided against the marriage and asked the groom and his party to leave. Local sources and the bride's family confirmed that Junaid refused to apologize for his comments, leading to the final decision to call off the wedding. The belongings brought by the groom's family were subsequently returned. However, Md Junaid presented a different account via a Facebook post, claiming the primary issue was a dispute over the "denmohor," or dower. He alleged that the bride's family demanded ten times the previously agreed-upon amount, a demand he and his family refused to meet.
