Grup Ekin singer Metin Turan released from prison

Metin Turan, the lead singer and writer for the band Grup Ekin, has been released from prison after serving 25 years. His release was announced by his lawyer, İsmail Topkaya, via social media.

Turan suffers from severe vision loss in both eyes. A report from the Forensic Medicine Institute had previously stated that he could not remain in prison, but an application based on this report was initially rejected by the Bafra Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. An appeal was subsequently filed with the Execution Judgeship.

During his time in prison, Turan began writing short stories. He received the 'Ümit Kaftancıoğlu Short Story Award' in 2019 for his story 'Öbürkü'. He also won honorable mentions in the 'Gülten Akın to Me Letter Award' in 2021 and the 'Sait Faik Short Story Competition' in 2022.

Turan, an ODTÜ graduate, was previously the lead singer for Grup Yorum as well. He was imprisoned in the 1990s for political reasons. His published works include children's books and collections of short stories. His literary achievements highlight his continued engagement with writing despite his imprisonment and vision impairment.
