Guadeloupe: Five seriously injured in distillery explosion

Five individuals sustained severe injuries following an explosion at the Montebello distillery in Petit-Bourg, Guadeloupe, on Friday morning. The blast occurred around 8:30 a.m. local time, sending shockwaves through the community.

The injured victims suffered extensive burns and fractures. One person was reportedly in cardio-respiratory arrest and required resuscitation at the scene. Emergency services, including about 20 firefighters, were quickly mobilized to manage the situation.

In addition to the critically injured, twelve other individuals present at the distillery were reported as "shocked" but unharmed. A psychological support unit has been set up in the area to assist those affected by the traumatic event. The explosion did not result in a subsequent fire, though damage to the distillery's roof was visible.

The Montebello distillery, established in 1930, is one of Guadeloupe's oldest and is currently in its peak production season. The incident has halted all activity at the facility, raising concerns about its operations and the impact on local rum production.
