Guatemala faces Ecuador in friendly ahead of 2026 World Cup preparations

The Guatemalan national soccer team, under Mexican coach Luis Fernando Tena, is set to face the World Cup-bound Ecuador in a friendly match on June 7. The game will take place at the ScottsMiracle-Gro Field in Columbus, Ohio, a venue with a capacity of nearly 24,000 spectators.

Guatemala enters the match on a difficult run, having lost all three of its games so far this year: 1-0 against Canada in January, a heavy 7-0 defeat to Algeria in March, and a 3-1 loss to the Czech Republic in June. This contrasts sharply with Ecuador, which boasts an impressive 18-game unbeaten streak, including seven wins and eleven draws. Ecuador is also actively preparing for the 2026 World Cup, where they are drawn into Group E alongside Germany, Ivory Coast, and Curaçao.

The upcoming friendly holds particular significance for Guatemalan fans, as it marks their team's first encounter with a South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) opponent in nearly two years. Their last match against a Conmebol nation was a 1-1 draw against Uruguay on September 1, 2024. In that game, Uruguay fielded a squad composed entirely of local league players, resulting in a more competitive match than anticipated. Lucas Pino scored for Uruguay in the 20th minute, but Pedro Altán equalized for Guatemala in the 66th minute.

Guatemala's recent history against Conmebol teams also includes a 4-1 defeat to Argentina on June 14, 2024, in a match where Guatemala briefly took the lead due to an own goal by Lisandro Martínez.
