Guatemala medical dean election raises concerns over prolonged tenure and sole student slate

The upcoming election at the University of San Carlos of Guatemala’s Faculty of Medicine has raised concern over the prolonged tenure of Alberto García González, who has remained in the position of first member of the board for nearly four years.

The faculty is now close to changing the leadership of its governing board. The situation has drawn the attention of the Board of Directors of Guatemala’s College of Physicians and Surgeons.

The process has also been marked by the presence of only one student slate, adding another point of concern as the faculty prepares for the leadership change.
