Guatemalan authors find platform at FILGUA book fair

The FILGUA International Book Fair in Guatemala is more than just a book sale; it has evolved into a vital meeting point for readers, booksellers, and publishers. Crucially, it serves as a significant platform for Guatemalan writers to launch their literary creations.

It is often difficult to find a bookstore or cultural center to host a presentation, either due to costs or because, amidst so many titles, one more book does not always seem attractive. But the fair gives them the opportunity to make their work visible. Many people wait to have their book ready to present it at FILGUA, as it is the most important cultural and book event in Guatemala.

César Medina, president of the Guatemalan Publishers' Guild, which organizes FILGUA, noted that the fair received around 240 requests for book presentations this year. Thanks to a dedicated space for national authors, over 200 presentations have been accommodated. "It is often difficult to find a bookstore or cultural center to host a presentation, either due to costs or because, amidst so many titles, one more book does not always seem attractive," Medina explained. "But the fair gives them the opportunity to make their work visible. Many people wait to have their book ready to present it at FILGUA, as it is the most important cultural and book event in Guatemala."

Among the featured national authors for FILGUA 2026 are Adolfo Méndez Vides, Francisco Pérez de Antón, Edgar Ortiz, Jay Sandoval, Negma Coy, Denise Phe-Funchal, Nicté Serra, Brenda Solís-Fong, Irma Alicia Velásquez Nimatuj, Guisela López, Vania Vargas, and Carolina Escobar Sarti. Vania Vargas, an invited author, shared her long-standing connection with the fair, having participated for about 12 years as a bookseller before presenting her own works. This year, she will present "Por brújula un reloj," a poetry book, and a work on Alfonso Quijada Urías. "Many editorial projects, large and small, or those that manage to carve out a space, have the opportunity to exhibit their work," Vargas said. "For me, FILGUA represents a celebration of books, and I find it important because it gives its place to this object that still seems strange within a society like ours."

Carolina Escobar Sarti, another special guest, has not presented her books at the fair but has actively participated in events promoting her Guatemalan colleagues' works. "I will be in various activities: tributes, talks, congresses within the framework of the fair," she stated, highlighting the fair's role in fostering literary exchange and recognition within Guatemala.
