Guillermo del Toro Celebrates 20 Years of "Pan's Labyrinth," Defends Art Against AI

Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro marked the 20th anniversary of his celebrated dark fantasy film "Pan's Labyrinth" at San Diego Comic-Con, joined by collaborators Doug Jones, Ivana Baquero, and cinematographer Guillermo Navarro.

The Mexican director announced that the film will receive a theatrical re-release on October 9 in a newly restored 3D and HDR version. Del Toro proudly declared that the restoration process was completed entirely without the use of artificial intelligence, drawing applause from the audience. "Absolutely no AI!" he exclaimed, highlighting the artisanal approach taken to preserve the film's essence.

During the panel, del Toro passionately defended the value of art and artistic legacy. "What we are protecting is the beauty and the redemptive power of art. It's not about who gets the credit. We are protecting an artistic legacy," he stated. The meticulous 3D conversion process was emphasized as a labor of love, undertaken with the necessary time to maintain the film's original spirit.

"Pan's Labyrinth," released in 2006, tells the story of Ofelia, a young girl who escapes the harsh reality of Francoist Spain in 1944 by retreating into a magical, albeit dangerous, underworld. The film garnered international acclaim, grossing over $80 million worldwide and earning six Academy Award nominations, ultimately winning Oscars for Best Makeup, Best Cinematography, and Best Art Direction.

The anniversary celebration will also include a documentary detailing the film's creation, featuring interviews with various artists. The panel also touched upon other upcoming releases and fan expectations for various franchises at Comic-Con.
