Gunman kills one, injures five in Israel before being killed

A gunman killed one person and injured five others in central Israel on Sunday before being shot dead by security forces. The attacker, identified as 21-year-old Arab Israeli Omar Yassin, carried out the shooting spree in his car across multiple locations near Kochav Yair, Tzur Yitzhak, and Tzur Natan.

Hamas and Islamic Jihad praised the attack, calling it 'heroic' and a response to Israeli actions. "The resistance will continue," the terrorist organization stated, according to Al Jazeera.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani condemned the attack, stating, "No political cause, no conflict, no claim can legitimize the massacre of innocent civilians. Dialogue is the only path to lasting peace."

The attack began around 11 a.m. near the communities. Yassin first shot two civilians at a McDonald's before fleeing and injuring another person in Tzur Yitzhak. He then shot and killed 55-year-old Haim Kalomiti, a retired major serving as a reservist in Tzur Natan's security, before being neutralized by security forces. Two of the injured are in serious condition and underwent surgery.

Shahar Hazan, a witness, described the scene: "It started with the sound of five shots, one after another. We didn't understand where they were coming from. Then it became clear they were right next to me, at McDonald's." He added, "The attacker managed to leave the scene without being immediately caught. The feeling is one of existential fear."

A manhunt involving army units, the Shin Bet, and police was launched, fearing multiple attackers. Residents were alerted and remained barricaded in their homes for two hours. The IDF eventually located Yassin, confirming he acted alone, and neutralized him. Roads leading to and from Taiba, Yassin's hometown, were subsequently closed.
