Gunman shoots nine in crowded Tucson nightlife district before police shoot him down

Nine people were wounded in a mass shooting that erupted early Sunday in a busy commercial district near downtown Tucson, Arizona, police reported. The suspect was also shot by police and is in critical condition.

Police officers on routine foot patrol heard gunfire around 2 a.m. and responded to the scene. They encountered a suspect, issuing repeated commands before firing their weapons. Tucson Police Department spokesperson Frank Magos stated that officers rendered first aid to the gunman, who was then transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. The nine other victims, all adults, sustained injuries, many to their extremities, and were taken to hospitals in critical condition. No police officers were injured.

Magos described the area as "very vibrant here, very lively crowd" at the time of the shooting. Local television station KGUN-TV, citing police sources, reported that the shooting stemmed from a confrontation between two groups known to each other, with bystanders being struck by gunfire. Mayor Regina Romero stated, "A shooter recklessly began shooting in a crowded area, striking nine people before being stopped by a Tucson Police officer," adding that all victims were stabilized and hospitalized.
