Gunmen invade Rivers community, kill two

Gunmen invaded Rumuodogo 2 Community in Rivers State's Emohua Local Government Area early Monday, killing two residents. The attackers, arriving on motorcycles, reportedly stormed houses in a commando-style operation, searching for specific targets.

They came by 1 a.m., broke our door and brought my husband and me outside. I was even naked when we were brought outside. They started beating my husband and shot him.

A woman identified as Monica, whose husband was among the victims, recounted the harrowing experience. She stated that the assailants entered her home around 1 AM, forcing her and her husband outside while she was still unclothed. According to her, the attackers beat her husband and then shot him. She claimed the gunmen initially intended to kill her as well but spared her because she is a woman.

They wanted to kill me too, but one of them said they should leave me because I am a woman.

Monica alleged that the attackers claimed the community was responsible for the deaths of individuals whose bodies were discovered in a river the previous Monday. The attack has instilled panic in the community, with many residents fleeing to seek safety in nearby bushes.

They said our community was responsible for the killing of the persons whose dead bodies were discovered in the river last Monday.

The Rivers State Police Command, through its spokesperson Blessing Agabe, confirmed the incident. Agabe stated that two individuals were killed and that an investigation is ongoing to determine the motive and arrest those responsible. This incident follows a violent land dispute in Cross River State on Friday, where one person was killed and others injured in Biase Local Government Area.
