Gunmen kill vigilante leader, three women in Rivers

A vigilante leader and three women were killed in a brutal attack by unidentified gunmen in Omoku, Rivers State, Nigeria. Ozemela Nwaocha, the Omoku Zonal Commander of the Security Planning and Advisory Committee, was the primary target, according to police reports.

The Rivers State Police Command is aware of this unfortunate incident and is deeply saddened by it. The command condemns this act in its entirety and assures the public that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.

The incident unfolded near Nwaocha's residence on Tuesday evening. Police spokeswoman Blessing Agabe confirmed that the gunmen confronted Nwaocha and opened fire, fatally shooting him and the three women who were with him. Two other individuals sustained gunshot wounds and are currently receiving medical treatment.

Nkem Godknows, a spokesperson for the security committee, described the attack as a "Gestapo-style operation." He alleged that Nwaocha was shot multiple times before the assailants turned their weapons on the women. The attack has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting an urgent appeal for enhanced security measures.

The gunmen also killed Nwaocha’s sister and two other women. Two other persons within the premises sustained gunshot wounds and are currently receiving treatment in the hospital.

The Rivers State Police Command has condemned the killings and assured the public that perpetrators will be brought to justice. An investigation is underway, and authorities are urging residents to provide any useful information. Meanwhile, the security committee spokesman highlighted the challenges faced by vigilante groups, noting their lack of adequate support and resources despite the risks involved in maintaining security. He appealed to the state government and stakeholders for increased support to enable them to perform their duties more effectively.
