Gyeonggi Province Arts Council Launches 'Cultural Diversity Festa' for Artist Collaboration

Instead of traditional expert reviews, the Gyeonggi Arts Council is fostering a new approach to supporting artists with its inaugural 'Cultural Diversity Festa.' Running from September to December, the initiative prioritizes peer-to-peer feedback and collaborative development for artistic projects.

The festival invites 20 artists from Gyeonggi Province, including 15 emerging artists under 45 and five established artists. Participants will gather on September 10, October 8, and November 5 in Bucheon to present their work-in-progress. The focus is on dialogue, with artists receiving questions and feedback from their peers to refine their concepts and explore potential collaborations.

A unique aspect of the Festa is its funding model. Following the three collaborative sessions, participants will collectively decide how to allocate 20 million won in joint creation funds through a participatory public funding system. Each artist will also receive a 300,000 won stipend for their participation.

While the Gyeonggi Arts Council has a history of organizing events like the Gyeonggi Folk Arts Festival, this new initiative shifts the emphasis from showcasing completed works to nurturing the creative process itself. The concept of cultural diversity is also broadened, extending beyond minority cultures or identity differences to encompass the right of individuals to express their unique backgrounds, experiences, and senses.
