Gyeonggi Province expands '1,000 Won Store' for students to six universities

Gyeonggi Province is broadening its "Student 1,000 Won Store" initiative, a program designed to ease the financial strain on university students, to include six universities this year. The expansion follows a successful pilot program that benefited nearly 20,000 students.

The initiative offers students essential items like food and daily necessities for a mere 1,000 won, representing over a 90% discount compared to market prices. This project is distinguished by its operation entirely through private corporate donations, showcasing a collaborative model involving the public sector, private enterprises, and educational institutions.

Last year's pilot program, launched at two universities, saw overwhelming student participation and positive feedback, leading to numerous requests for its expansion. Gyeonggi Province signed a memorandum of understanding with NH Nonghyup Bank, Hana Bank, the Gyeonggi Province Social Welfare Council, the Community Chest of Korea, and the six participating universities to facilitate the program's growth.

The expanded program will now reach students across both northern and southern Gyeonggi Province, with Ajou University, Yuhan University, Kyungbok University, and Nonghyup University joining the initial two. The participating institutions are set to open their stores sequentially starting with the second semester. Gyeonggi Province plans to further increase private funding and add more universities to solidify the program as a flagship youth support initiative.

During the signing ceremony, Gyeonggi Province Economic Vice Governor Ju Hyung-chul emphasized the program's role in directly supporting young people. He stated, "The Student 1,000 Won Store is a model that directly helps the lives of young people by bringing together the private sector, public sector, and universities." He added that the initiative embodies Gyeonggi Province's core values of fairness, innovation, and inclusion, aiming to strengthen the dreams and futures of young people.
