Gyeonggi Province Launches Migrant Human Rights Committee, Elects Lee Ja-seung Chair

Gyeonggi Province has taken a significant step forward in safeguarding the rights of its diverse migrant population by establishing the 'Gyeonggi Provincial Committee for the Prohibition of Racial Discrimination and Human Rights Protection for Migrants.' This move comes in response to a series of alarming human rights violations, including the recent case in Hwaseong where a migrant worker suffered severe injuries from an air gun.

The committee's formation is rooted in the province's pioneering 'Migrant Human Rights Protection 3 Major Ordinances,' enacted last year. Its mandate is comprehensive, encompassing the formulation and evaluation of basic plans for non-discrimination and migrant rights, and ensuring that investigation findings are integrated into policy. It will also investigate discrimination cases, issue corrective recommendations, and develop measures for victim protection and support.

During its inaugural meeting, former lawmaker Lee Ja-seung was elected chairperson, and lawyer Choi Jeong-gyu as vice-chairperson. A critical point raised was the current reactive approach to rights violations, which often only kicks in after a case gains public attention. The committee identified the urgent need to build a robust 'reporting-protection-linkage' system that ensures immediate support from the moment a violation is reported.

Beyond its advisory role, there's a strong call for the committee to function as a platform connecting various policies and initiatives. Discussions also touched upon creating a digital portal to enhance accessibility for foreign nationals, providing information in multiple languages, and establishing an emergency support system linked with remittance apps. Gyeonggi Province also plans to expand its support systems, including a one-stop service for discrimination victims and enhanced legal aid for wage disputes and immigration issues. This proactive stance underscores Gyeonggi's commitment to becoming a more inclusive and rights-respecting region for all its residents.
