Gyeongnam Energy Joins Emergency Rescue Drill for Complex Disasters in Gimhae

Gyeongnam Energy participated in a large-scale emergency rescue exercise at Lotte Premium Outlet Gimhae on Sept. 1, testing how authorities would respond to a complex disaster involving a ruptured gas pipeline.

Gimhae city, the Gimhae Western Fire Station, the Gimhae Western Police Station and Gyeongnam Energy were among 12 related organizations taking part. The drill examined each agency’s response procedures and its ability to coordinate with the others during a major disaster.

The scenario began with excavation work damaging a medium-pressure urban gas pipeline. Gyeongnam Energy practiced receiving the accident report, relaying information, dispatching an emergency team, controlling safety at the site, taking urgent action against the gas leak and repairing the pipeline.

Thorough preparation and repeated training are important to respond quickly and accurately to unexpected disasters and accidents.

During the leak-control exercise, the company used its own “dispersal-type pad” to block gas escaping from the damaged pipe. Video equipment and drones transmitted real-time information from the scene to the comprehensive command center, while a safety-management system monitored the incident.

The exercise also checked information-sharing and command links between field responders and the control room. Shin Chang-dong, Gyeongnam Energy’s chief executive, said regular preparation and repeated drills were essential for responding quickly and accurately to unexpected disasters and accidents.
