Hamburg Expects 250,000 for Queer Demonstration Following Berlin Attack

Hamburg anticipates a massive turnout of around 250,000 people for its Christopher Street Day demonstration today, under the banner "Solidarisch queer. Haltung zeigen!" (Queer Solidarity. Show Your Stance!).

The event takes place just one week after a deadly Islamist attack targeted a similar pride event in Berlin. In response, Hamburg police have announced a significantly increased security presence, deploying twice the number of officers compared to last year.

In Berlin, an attacker drove a vehicle into a crowd and then reportedly used a machete, resulting in one death and 31 injuries. The 21-year-old assailant was shot and killed by police. The attack has cast a shadow over pride events, but organizers in Hamburg are determined not to be intimidated.

"We don't want to be intimidated by the attack," stated Manuel Opitz, spokesperson for the Pride Week association organizing the Hamburg event. "The queer community wants to give each other strength." The demonstration will proceed through the St. Georg district to the city center, featuring over 40 trucks from various organizations, parties, businesses, and church groups. Political support has been voiced by prominent figures from the SPD and Green parties, including Matthias Miersch and Ricarda Lang. A contingent from the Berlin CSD association will also participate, with attendees encouraged to wear dark clothing.
