Hamburg Police Catch Over 4,000 Speeders in Europe-Wide Operation

Hamburg police apprehended more than 4,000 drivers for speeding during a pan-European traffic enforcement initiative. The extensive operation utilized both mobile and stationary speed cameras throughout the city. Among the detected violations were three city buses caught speeding near the Bridge of June 17 in Harburg, where vehicles over 3.5 tons are required to maintain a crawling pace when turning right. Within a four-hour period, 30 such violations were recorded, with one bus traveling at 28 km/h in a 7 km/h zone.

Further speed checks on the Köhlbrand Bridge revealed 16 speeding offenses in under two hours. One driver was recorded at 92 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. Consequently, 13 drivers face potential driving bans, penalty points in Flensburg, and fines.

The 'Roadpol Speed' campaign, a Europe-wide traffic safety effort, saw 180 officers deployed in Hamburg. Beyond excessive speed, authorities identified 41 instances of illegal mobile phone use while driving, 23 violations related to improper turning or U-turns, and over 100 other infractions against various traffic regulations.
