Hamburg Pride Parade Begins Under Heavy Police Guard After Berlin Attack

Hamburg's annual Pride parade, one of Germany's largest, began today under a significantly increased police presence. The heightened security measures come just a week after a deadly extremist attack targeted the Pride parade in Berlin.

Organizers expect approximately 250,000 people to participate in the event, which features dozens of trucks moving through the city center. Hamburg's police chief stated earlier in the week that the number of officers assigned to protect the parade would be double that of last year.

This year's parade theme is "Queer in Solidarity. Take a stand for a future without fear." In a somber addition, trucks participating in the Hamburg event included one representing the Berlin Pride event. Individuals on this truck were asked to wear dark clothing to honor the victims of the previous week's attack.

Last week, a man driving a van plowed into people near the end of Berlin's Pride parade, subsequently attacking individuals with a machete-like blade. One woman died, and many others were injured. The 25-year-old suspect, Abdul B., was killed by police. Investigators later found a video in which the suspect, believed to be Abdul B., claimed responsibility and expressed allegiance to the Islamic State group. Prosecutors noted that B., born in Germany to Lebanese parents, had traveled to Lebanon in 2025 with the intention of joining ISIS in Syria and had made contact with suspected members.
