Hamburg Pride parade draws quarter-million amid heightened security after Berlin attack

Hamburg's Christopher Street Day (CSD) parade saw an estimated quarter-million participants, a significant turnout that proceeded under heightened security measures in the wake of a recent fatal attack at Berlin's CSD event. Organizers stressed their determination not to be intimidated by such violence.

"We do not want to be intimidated by the attack," said Manuel Opitz, spokesperson for the Pride Week association, which organized the Hamburg demonstration. He emphasized the queer community's commitment to providing each other with strength and solidarity during this time. Political support was evident, with prominent figures from the SPD and Greens, including parliamentary group leader Matthias Miersch and former Green Party leader Ricarda Lang, announcing their attendance.

The parade's motto, "Solidarisch queer. Haltung zeigen – für eine Zukunft ohne Angst!" (Queer solidarity. Show attitude – for a future without fear!), underscored a message of resilience and a demand for a society free from fear. Over 40 trucks from various organizations, parties, and even church communities joined the procession, which wound through the St. Georg district towards the city center. Notably, the Berlin CSD association also participated with its own float, where attendees wore dark clothing as a sign of mourning and remembrance.

The attack in Berlin, where an Islamist assailant drove a car into a crowd and attacked others with a machete, resulted in one death and 31 injuries. The 21-year-old perpetrator, known to authorities and with ties to Islamist terrorism, was shot dead by police. The incident has cast a shadow over the CSD events, prompting discussions within the queer community about how to respond and move forward.
