Handball: Champion HSG Blomberg-Lippe to miss Sandberg for months due to pulmonary embolism

The German women's handball team, HSG Blomberg-Lippe, faces a significant setback as key player Malin Sandberg will be sidelined for at least three months. The team, which recently won the German championship, confirmed that Sandberg is suffering from a pulmonary embolism.

Sandberg, a Swedish backcourt player, began experiencing pain before the team's training camp. She did not travel with the team for preparation and subsequently underwent medical examinations. These tests revealed the pulmonary embolism, a serious condition requiring immediate medical attention and a lengthy recovery period.

Following the necessary medical treatment, Sandberg is expected to rest for a minimum of three months. After this period, she will gradually work her way back to the physically demanding sport. The 26-year-old joined Blomberg-Lippe in 2025 from France. In her first season with the club, she was instrumental in securing their first-ever league title, defeating cup winners Borussia Dortmund.
