Hantavirus Andes Strain Detected in Tourist in France, Isolated in Spain

Health authorities in France have confirmed a case of the Andes strain of hantavirus in a Franco-Argentine tourist who visited France during the latter half of July. This particular strain is notable for its potential to transmit between humans through close, prolonged contact.

The patient, who initially presented with mild symptoms, is currently asymptomatic. French health officials have initiated measures to trace the tourist's itinerary and identify potential close contacts. The Ministry of Health convened a scientific expert group to determine the next steps in managing the situation.

A Franco-Argentine citizen who is in Galicia has tested positive for Hantavirus Andes, following a sample taken a few days ago in France for mild respiratory symptoms. The case sought health services in France with mild symptoms. Later, he traveled to Spain asymptomatic, so he could no longer infect.

Coordination is underway at a European level to monitor the case and any potential spread. Spanish health minister Mónica García confirmed the patient is in Galicia, Spain, and that protocols are in place to manage potential contacts.
