‘Harry Potter’ has not even premiered, and two major actors have already left

HBO’s new Harry Potter series is undergoing cast and directing changes before its first season has even premiered. The show is scheduled to launch on December 25, 2026.

Nicholas Hoult is leaving the role of Gilderoy Lockhart because filming Man of Tomorrow created scheduling conflicts, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Kit Harington will take over the role for the second season. Gracie Cochrane, who plays Ginny Weasley, will also leave after the first installment because of unforeseen circumstances, Deadline reported. HBO plans to hold a new casting process for Ginny.

The directing team has also changed. Ally Pankiw declined to participate because of ethical disagreements linked to J.K. Rowling’s comments about the transgender community, while Kate Herron reportedly turned down two offers to direct episodes.

The first season, focused on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, has completed filming. Francesca Gardiner serves as executive producer and Mark Mylod directed the season. Production on the second season, based on The Chamber of Secrets, is due to begin in autumn 2026 as HBO reorganizes the cast.

HBO Max has confirmed that the first episode will premiere worldwide on December 25, 2026. The remaining episodes will air weekly through February 2027, with the first season planned to contain eight episodes running an estimated 50 to 60 minutes each.
