In 1982, when the XIV Central American and Caribbean Games faced potential collapse after Puerto Rico's Mayagüez withdrew due to a lack of government support, Cuba stepped in to host. With just over a year until the event, Havana assumed the challenge, organizing what became one of the most memorable and well-attended regional games of the 20th century.

From August 7 to 18, 1982, Havana, along with co-host cities Santiago de Cuba and Cienfuegos, welcomed 22 nations, including the historic debut of Grenada and the British Virgin Islands. Despite notable absences, the games attracted a record 2,799 athletes competing across 24 disciplines and 247 events. New sports like table tennis, archery, rowing, field hockey, and Greco-Roman wrestling were introduced, injecting fresh energy into the regional sporting calendar.

The opening ceremony at the Pedro Marrero Stadium set a new precedent. María Caridad Colón, the reigning Olympic javelin champion from Moscow 1980, made history as the first woman to light the Central American and Caribbean Games' cauldron. The games also fostered a unique social experiment within the Central American Village at the Vladimir Ilich Lenin Vocational School. For the first time in such a large-scale event, security perimeters and gender-based separation barriers were eliminated, and not a single incident was reported.

Fencing and artistic gymnastics also saw Cuban athletes monopolize the top spots, and athletics contributed 27 titles to the impressive tally.
