Her memoir, "This Is Me: A Reckoning," published shortly before her death, offered a candid look at the challenges she faced. Motherhood, beginning with the birth of her daughter Kaya in 2014 with Ukrainian boxer Wladimir Klitschko, was complicated by severe postpartum depression. Panettiere publicly shared her struggles in 2015, seeking treatment.

"There I was with this beautiful baby, with a very fortunate life, and I couldn't be happy for anything in the world. I was incredibly depressed," she recalled in an interview with CBS. This period also impacted her relationship with her daughter. In 2018, Kaya moved to Ukraine to live with Klitschko, a decision Panettiere later clarified was not an abandonment but a necessity due to her own mental health and addiction struggles.

Panettiere also openly discussed her significant battles with alcohol and medication addiction, leading to voluntary rehabilitation. "I thought something was very wrong with me, so I thought, 'Fireball whisky will fix it, obviously.' And it didn't. It does for a moment, but then it makes everything worse," she revealed in an interview with Good Morning America.

Her personal life was further marked by a tumultuous relationship with Brian Hickerson, which began in 2018. The relationship was marred by domestic violence incidents, leading to Hickerson's arrest in 2020 after Panettiere reported an assault. He pleaded guilty and received a prison sentence. Panettiere later described the relationship as abusive, acknowledging her difficulty in recognizing and escaping the situation. The couple was reportedly linked again this year.
