Health of Norway's King Deteriorated but he is Stable Now

King Harald of Norway's health took a turn for the worse over the weekend, prompting Crown Prince Haakon to visit his father at the National Hospital on Monday. The 89-year-old monarch, who has been on sick leave for several weeks, was admitted to the hospital a week prior.

The royal palace announced late Sunday that the king is now receiving antibiotics for a bacterial blood infection and has responded well to the treatment, with his condition described as stable. Crown Prince Haakon has been acting as regent during his father's absence.

Last week, the palace had stated the king was being treated with cortisone for hemolytic anemia, which had led to fluid accumulation requiring hospitalization. Norway's Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre expressed his well wishes, stating that "all of Norway is following and thinking about the king" and hoping he continues to receive excellent care from the nation's healthcare system.

King Harald, who ascended the throne in 1991, has experienced several health issues in recent years. He was hospitalized in Spain for a skin infection during a winter vacation in February and previously received a temporary pacemaker in Malaysia two years ago after falling ill during a private trip with the queen. He later returned to Norway to have a permanent pacemaker fitted.
