Heatwave conditions to return for many as UK temperatures to peak at 35C

Many parts of the UK can expect the return of heatwave conditions next week, with forecasters predicting temperatures could peak at 35C. This follows a brief respite from the summer's heat.

The third heatwave of the year concluded last weekend for most of England and Wales as cooler air moved in, bringing temperatures down to a more moderate 20-24C. However, two specific locations, Usk and Exeter, have managed to meet their heatwave criteria for 20 consecutive days, marking the longest such period this year.

Even these localized heatwaves are likely to dissipate over the upcoming weekend as temperatures continue to drop and some areas experience rain. However, this cooling trend is anticipated to be short-lived.

Meteorologists expect high pressure to build south of the UK next week. This atmospheric setup will likely cause rain-bearing weather fronts to stall, confining any wet weather primarily to northern and western regions, particularly north-west Scotland. In contrast, southern parts of the UK are predicted to see a significant rise in temperatures once again, raising the possibility of a fourth heatwave.
