Heatwave drives surge in tourism to France's Pas-de-Calais coast

Coastal towns in France's Pas-de-Calais department are experiencing a significant boom in tourism, driven by visitors seeking refuge from a widespread heatwave.

In June, the department recorded 2.35 million overnight stays, marking a substantial 13% increase compared to the previous year, according to data from Flux Vision analyzed by Pas-de-Calais Tourisme. The surge reached its zenith on June 27, during the peak of the second heatwave that has gripped France.

On the promenade in Wimereux, tourists from various backgrounds mingle, with foreign languages becoming increasingly common. The seaside town, known for its Belle Époque villas, offers a respite from the inland heat. At low tide, the English Channel recedes significantly, revealing sandy expanses dotted with parasols and towels, creating a vibrant holiday atmosphere.

Local officials and tourism operators are welcoming the influx, noting that the cooler coastal climate is a major draw. The department is seeing visitors from France, as well as international travelers from Belgium, the UK, and Germany, indicated by the flags flying along the promenade. This unexpected summer success highlights the appeal of coastal destinations during periods of extreme heat.
