Heatwave grips South Korea, causing multiple heat-related illnesses in Gwangju and Jeonnam

Gwangju and the Jeonnam province in South Korea are grappling with a relentless heatwave, leading to a surge in heat-related illnesses. The region has issued heatwave advisories, with temperatures expected to reach uncomfortable highs.

Recent incidents highlight the dangers of the extreme heat. An 80-year-old individual collapsed on a street while returning home, exhibiting symptoms of heat syncope. In another case, an elderly woman was hospitalized with heatstroke after prolonged work in a field, her body temperature soaring to nearly 40 degrees Celsius.

Even a firefighter required medical attention for heatstroke after battling a warehouse fire. Earlier in the day, a nonagenarian collapsed while sitting on a bench, also showing signs of heat syncope. These events underscore the pervasive threat of the heat across all age groups and activities.

Since the tracking of heat-related illnesses began on May 15, Gwangju and Jeonnam have recorded 141 cases. While no official fatalities have been reported thus far, the continuous high temperatures and the increasing number of affected individuals serve as a stark warning. Officials are emphasizing the critical need for adequate hydration and the importance of limiting outdoor activities during the peak heat.
