Heavy Machinery Arrives on Lara-Trujillo Pan-American Highway for Repaving After Community Protest

Heavy machinery has arrived in La Pastora, located in the Torres municipality of Lara state, Venezuela, to commence the repaving of a critical section of the Pan-American Highway connecting to Trujillo. The deployment of specialized equipment, including scarifiers and pavement profilers, marks a response to a community protest and a commitment made by regional authorities.

The arrival of the machinery on August 25 fulfills an agreement signed on August 18 between community representatives and officials from the Lara State Governorate. This pact was reached after a protest action by residents that halted traffic on the vital route for over seven hours. The regional government pledged to begin formal repaving work no later than August 27.

Simultaneously, crews from the Torres Municipality's Mayor's Office have been undertaking preparatory work, including clearing vegetation along the roadside. For agricultural producers, merchants, and interurban transporters in the Cecilio Zubillaga parish, the arrival of the equipment brings a sense of cautious optimism. They highlight that a 50-kilometer segment of the road has suffered years of neglect, developing numerous potholes and geological faults that impede the transport of agricultural goods and passengers.

Social organizations in La Pastora have stated their intention to maintain social oversight of the construction site. They aim to ensure that the repaving work begins immediately and is not merely a symbolic deployment of machinery. As of now, regional authorities have not yet disclosed a detailed work plan or the specific amount of asphalt budgeted for the reconstruction of this interstate section.
