Heavy Rain Causes Flooding and Sinkholes in Baja California Sur as Cars Are Swept Into Streams

Intermittent rain continued across Baja California Sur on Wednesday, leaving swollen streams, flooded roads and sinkholes in Los Cabos and La Paz. The conditions followed rainfall recorded during the previous 24 hours.

In Los Cabos, authorities increased monitoring to stop drivers and pedestrians from attempting to cross flowing streams. Juan Antonio Carbajal Figueroa, commander of the Cabo San Lucas fire department, said some vehicles had been swept away and firefighters had rescued motorists. He urged residents not to enter the currents and to take extreme precautions.

Municipal authorities also closed the port of San José del Cabo to smaller vessels as a preventive measure because of the weather. In La Paz, accumulated rainfall caused landslides, standing water and sinkholes on streets and avenues across several parts of the capital.

The state health protection commission, Coepris, advised residents and visitors not to enter beaches in La Paz’s urban area for four days. Its head, José Manuel Junco Navarro, said runoff had carried waste into the bay and could temporarily increase microorganism levels, creating a health risk at high concentrations.

Cleanup and response work continued in Comondú, where heavy rain on Tuesday afternoon and night caused flooding, especially in Ciudad Constitución. Mayor Roberto Pantoja Castro said classes at all educational levels in the municipal seat were suspended on Wednesday while authorities continued inspections and assistance efforts.
