Heavy Rain Causes Floods in Siirt: 35 Small Cattle Dead

The recent torrential rains in Turkey's southeastern Siirt province have brought devastation, particularly to the Şirvan district. Flash floods, triggered by intense rainfall overnight, have caused significant damage, including the collapse of a vital bridge and widespread flooding of agricultural lands. The human and economic toll is substantial, with livestock lost and essential stored grains swept away.

The İmaç family, who rely on animal husbandry, suffered a tragic loss with 35 of their sheep perishing in the floodwaters. Their stored barley, a crucial commodity, was also lost. This highlights the vulnerability of rural communities to extreme weather events and the devastating impact on livelihoods. Governor Kemal Kızılkaya's visit to the affected areas underscores the government's attention to the crisis, with efforts focused on damage assessment and providing necessary support.

When we woke up at 02:00 at night, we saw that the water was up to the windows and walls. We broke through here with our own means to save the animals, we saved 4-5 animals. Our other animals were swept away and lost in the flood. We officially do animal husbandry here. Our animals had tags, they were all insured. We want our state to help us. The culvert of the bridge got blocked, it came this way. We barely saved our lives. There are 4-5 of us here, we threw ourselves out in a desperate struggle. The doors of our barns were all broken, and we had at least 30 tons of barley in our storage, all of it was swept away by the flood.

Between 03:00 and 05:00 at night, intense rainfall occurred, ranging from 30 to 97 kilograms per square meter. Due to this short-term intense rainfall, we received flood warnings from homes and workplaces; a total of 61 warnings reached our teams. Our teams are in the field; necessary precautions had been taken in risky areas before. However, the sudden and high amount of rainfall caused damage in some areas. Especially our old highway bridge in the Kezer vicinity was damaged. For safety reasons, we closed the bridge to traffic, and transportation is provided in a controlled manner via the new bridge. We are also receiving warnings from our districts, especially Kurtalan and Şirvan, and from rural areas. All our teams are responding rapidly to these warnings. Our greatest consolation is that there was no loss of life in the face of this disaster. Our priority now is the evacuation of flooded areas, followed by damage assessment studies. After the assessments are completed, the necessary support will be provided to our citizens. We want our citizens to rest assured. Our condolences to all our citizens.
