Heavy Rain Floods Pingtung Road; Marilipa Bridge Underpass Partially Open

Torrential rains have battered Pingtung, Taiwan, with cumulative rainfall exceeding 1,000 millimeters in many mountainous and low-lying areas. The downpours have severely impacted the county's road network. Early reports indicated significant flooding on Provincial Highway 1 at the Fenggang Marilipa Bridge and on the northbound road to Hengchun, forcing many drivers to detour via Provincial Highway 9.

Police clarified that while water levels have slightly decreased, the Marilipa Bridge underpass on Provincial Highway 1 is not completely closed. Only the inner northbound lane remains barely passable. Authorities are closely watching the water levels and may impose traffic controls as needed. They urge drivers in the Hengchun and Fenggang areas to slow down and follow police instructions, warning that pre-emptive road closures could occur if the rain intensifies.

The water level under the Marilipa Bridge has slightly receded, and the road section is not completely closed, with only the inner northbound lane barely passable.

The severe rainfall has also disrupted transportation to and from the island of Liuqiu, with ferry services suspended for three and a half days due to high waves and poor sea conditions, severely affecting the supply of goods and passenger transport. In response to the risks posed by the rainfall, the Pingtung County government announced continued suspension of work and classes for Tuesday in eight indigenous townships, as well as specific areas in Donggang, Fangliao, Jiadong, and Nanzhou townships.
