Heavy Rain Triggers Flooding in Three North Sumatra Areas, Affecting Thousands

Heavy rain flooded three areas of North Sumatra on Monday, affecting thousands of residents but causing no deaths or evacuations, according to the provincial disaster agency.

In Deli Serdang, water from the Sei Putih River rose after intense rainfall and entered homes and roads in Punden Rejo village, Tanjung Morawa district. Water reached about 15 centimetres, affecting an estimated 30 families. The local government has coordinated with village officials and proposed installing a flap gate to prevent water from entering the drainage system.

Flooding in Medan affected residential areas in Medan Maimun district. A total of 482 homes were inundated, affecting 817 families, or 1,948 people. The affected areas included Hamdan, where 127 homes and 330 families were affected, Sei Mati, where 275 homes and 327 families were affected, and Aur, where 80 homes and 160 families were affected.

The government of Deli Serdang Regency has coordinated with the Punden Rejo village government and proposed the construction of a flap gate so that water does not enter the drainage system.

Langkat experienced flooding across four districts after heavy rain continued for two days upstream of the Batang Serangan River, raising river levels. The flooding began at about 6 a.m. and affected 2,678 families. In Batang Serangan, water in Sei Bamban reached 30 centimetres to 1 metre and affected an estimated 840 families. Alur Gadung in Sawit Seberang recorded water levels of 30 to 60 centimetres, affecting 630 families. Tebing Tanjung Selamat in Padang Tualang affected 728 families, with water between 30 and 70 centimetres, while Pekan Tanjung Pura affected 480 families at similar depths.

Officials continued to monitor the situation and urged residents to remain alert to sudden increases in water levels. No residents had evacuated, the agency said.
