Heavy-rain warning issued for four Taiwanese counties as Typhoon Sadler may return

Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration issued a heavy-rain warning for four cities and counties as low pressure and strengthening southwest winds brought a risk of intense, short-duration downpours.

The warning, issued at 1:05 a.m. on Sept. 1, covers Tainan, Taitung, Kaohsiung and Pingtung. Southern Taiwan faces the possibility of more persistent rain, while central and southeastern areas may see showers or thunderstorms and localized heavy rain.

Tropical Depression TD20, identified as the former Typhoon Sadler, was located about 990 kilometers west-southwest of Eluanbi at 2 a.m. It was moving at about 6 kilometers per hour toward the east-southeast before turning north, and forecasters said it showed signs of developing into a mild typhoon. Its outer circulation could influence Taiwan’s weather on Wednesday and Thursday.

Rain is expected in southern and eastern Taiwan on Wednesday, spreading to western Taiwan and Yilan on Thursday. From Friday through Saturday, the main areas of heavier rain are forecast to shift toward northern Taiwan and Yilan. Temperatures from Wednesday through Sunday are expected to reach about 30 to 35 degrees Celsius, with lows of 25 to 27 degrees.
