Heavy rain warnings issued for 14 cities and counties in Taiwan

Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration issued heavy-rain warnings for 14 cities, counties and offshore islands, with downpours expected from the afternoon of the first day through the following day.

The agency said a low-pressure system and southwest winds could produce short-duration intense rainfall. Kaohsiung and Pingtung faced a risk of localized heavy or torrential rain. Parts of Yunlin, Tainan, Taitung, Penghu, Orchid Island and Green Island could also receive heavy rain.

Strong afternoon convection could bring localized heavy or torrential rain to mountainous areas of Taoyuan and Yilan. Hsinchu, Miaoli, Yilan and mountainous parts of New Taipei were also at risk of heavy rain. Forecasters urged residents to watch for lightning and strong winds, guard against flooding in low-lying areas, and remain alert to landslides, falling rocks and rapidly rising streams after several days of rain.
