Heavy rains expose pothole in Kaohsiung, causing five motorcycle crashes overnight

A series of motorcycle accidents occurred on Qinan Road in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, due to a large pothole that formed after continuous heavy rainfall. The road, specifically the westbound direction, experienced severe surface damage, turning the cavity into a dangerous hazard for motorcyclists.

The "invisible killer," as the pothole was described, became particularly treacherous during the night. Poor visibility due to the downpour contributed to the danger, resulting in five separate crashes and collisions from Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Debris from the accidents littered the scene, and two riders sustained injuries requiring emergency medical attention.

Authorities responded to the multiple reports of accidents. Police officers, despite the heavy rain, rushed to the location to manage the situation. They initially placed warning cones, but the severe weather and limited visibility meant that subsequent riders still crashed into the submerged pothole.

To address the escalating danger, police intensified their efforts. They added more warning signs and flashing lights to the area and deployed additional officers to monitor the road conditions. The Nanzi Precinct strongly advised all road users to exercise extreme caution, recommending that drivers "reduce speed, increase following distance, avoid sudden braking, and frequent lane changes" when traveling on the affected road, especially during adverse weather.

The incident highlights the risks associated with road infrastructure damage exacerbated by extreme weather conditions. The local authorities are working to manage the immediate hazard while urging public awareness and adherence to safety measures.
