Heavy security at Osun-Osogbo festival

The annual Osun-Osogbo festival commenced in Osogbo, Nigeria, under a heavy security presence, reflecting concerns over recent violence in the region.

Armed police operatives and military personnel were visibly stationed along the routes leading to and within the ancient Osun-Osogbo Grove. Security operatives maintained a close watch on movements, with members of the Vigilante Corps barring journalists from accessing the podium area where invited guests were expected.

A security source, speaking anonymously, cited the "killings in recent months in Osun" and their link to "rivalry among cult groups" as the reason for the heightened security measures. The Osun State Commissioner of Police had previously assured residents and visitors of adequate security for the event.

The festival, which attracts visitors from within and outside Nigeria, is a globally recognized cultural event. The final rites were anticipated with the expected arrival of the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji, and the votary maid.
