Heavy security presence at Fadahunsi’s polling unit, lawmaker yet to vote

A significant security presence was observed at Polling Unit 001, Ilase NUD Primary School, Ward 04, in the Obokun Local Government Area of Osun State, where Senator Francis Fadahunsi, representing Osun East, was scheduled to cast his ballot. Despite the heightened security, the atmosphere at the polling unit remained calm on Saturday morning, with voters queuing and personnel maintaining order.

Elderly voters and persons with disabilities were prioritized, with a 100-year-old woman from the Ogbonaro area of Ilase being assisted to cast her vote around 10:19 a.m. The presence of security personnel was notably strong in the area where the lawmaker was expected to vote.

The calm at the polling unit contrasted with recent events, as Senator Fadahunsi, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), had allegedly threatened to "kill" members of the Accord Party in Ilesa. This alleged threat was reportedly made on Wednesday during a protest concerning the killings of APC members, a statement that heightened political tension ahead of the governorship election. Governor Ademola Adeleke is seeking a second term on the Accord Party's ticket.

Following the alleged threat, Mr. Fadahunsi was invited by the police. He later issued a clarification, asserting that his use of the word "kill" was intended metaphorically, referring to voting out the opposition party rather than any physical harm. The election sees Governor Adeleke, who recently switched from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Accord Party, seeking re-election.
