Herentals and Sport Vlaanderen to build new pool and ice rink by 2031

Herentals and Sport Vlaanderen are joining forces to construct a modern swimming pool and a dual ice rink in the Netepark, with an ambitious target date of 2031 for completion. The initiative stems from the recognition that the existing facilities are significantly outdated.

"Our swimming pool is severely outdated, and Sport Vlaanderen's ice rink is also worn out," stated Pascal Van Nueten, alderman of Sport for N-VA. "We have joined hands and will build a new swimming pool combined with a double ice rink." The new ice rink will feature two rinks, each measuring 30 by 60 meters, effectively doubling the current capacity.

Mayor Jan Bertels of Vooruit highlighted the project's regional focus, aiming to make Netepark a central hub for sports, relaxation, and community gathering for residents of Herentals and the surrounding areas. "People who participate in ice sports in the wider region can come to Herentals," Bertels added. "An ice rink in Herentals is needed, so we are happy to contribute."

The city also emphasizes sustainable infrastructure, noting that combining ice and swimming facilities on one site offers opportunities for efficient and multifunctional use. While the project requires extensive preparation, including permit applications, the goal is to lay the first stone by late 2029 and open the doors around 2031. The financing model will be shared between the municipalities and Sport Vlaanderen, ensuring that user prices remain consistent with current rates.
