Herodium Reawakens: Ancient Desert Fortress Hosts International Heritage Conference

Herodium, the legendary desert palace of King Herod, has been brought back to life for the first time in two millennia. The ancient fortress hosted the grand opening of the International Conference on Israeli Heritage and Antiquities in Judea and Samaria, drawing hundreds of international attendees.

The event, spearheaded by the Heritage Ministry, transformed the monumental tomb and palace into a vibrant center for culture, history, and national identity. Attendees included Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu, U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, members of Knesset, diplomats, and scholars.

The highlight was a multi-sensory production, “Herod VS Bar Kokhba: The Battle for Eternity.” Acclaimed actors Shuli Rand and Ron Shahar starred in the performance, which used live music, street theater, pyrotechnics, and historical reenactments to depict the ancient conflict between the Roman Empire and Jewish sovereignty.

This event is the flagship for “Derech Eretz Moreshet,” a national project investing in the restoration and accessibility of historical sites in Judea and Samaria. Herodium, representing the intersection of Herod's vision and the legacy of Jewish revolts, is a central piece of this initiative to connect the public with foundational historical sites.

U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee received the Heritage Prize for his dedication to strengthening ties to the region's historical roots.
