Hertha gets go-ahead to seek preliminary approval for new stadium

Hertha BSC has gained a new opening in its long-running search for a stadium site. An expert commission has approved land on Jesse-Owens-Allee, south of Berlin’s Maifeld, and recommended that the club submit a preliminary building request to the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district.

The request would allow construction and planning requirements to be examined before the club files a full building application. It would also clarify further questions surrounding the approval process.

A Senate working group has assessed the infrastructure implications of a new stadium since autumn 2024, holding eight meetings. Its review covered transport links, building regulations, noise protection and environmental law. Officials also examined heritage protection, the effect on operations at the Olympic Stadium, the project’s integration into the Olympic Park, and questions involving the tender process and leasehold rights.

Plans for a dedicated football stadium have existed for around ten years. The project was once expected to be completed in summer 2025.
