Heusden-Zolder hospital expands emergency services to speed up care

The Sint-Franciscusziekenhuis in Heusden-Zolder has commenced a significant expansion and renovation of its emergency department, a move designed to better manage the nearly 50% increase in patient numbers over the past two decades. The department now sees an average of 70 patients daily, with peaks reaching 100 on busy days.

To address the growing demand and reduce wait times, particularly for patients requiring intensive care, the hospital is implementing a two-zone system. Patients with less severe conditions will be directed to a new "fast-track zone" being created in the adjacent garage. This area will feature four additional treatment spaces, a separate waiting area, and a plaster room. The existing plaster room will be renovated into a full treatment space, and the nursing station will also be completely updated.

The renovation is being carried out while the emergency department remains operational. A key aspect of the project is the planned relocation of the "Mijn-Wachtpost West-midWest" GP waiting post to the hospital campus by 2027. This co-location aims to streamline patient access to the appropriate care provider, ensuring those with urgent hospital needs are seen promptly in the emergency department, while those with less critical complaints can be more easily referred to a general practitioner. Hospital officials anticipate this closer collaboration will further contribute to shorter waiting times.
