Heverlee bicycle bridge over E40 delayed again, opening pushed to year-end

The much-anticipated bicycle bridge over the E40 highway in Heverlee will not open in September as planned. The latest delay pushes the opening to the end of the year, frustrating cyclists who rely on the F29 cycle highway.

Officials cited the need for additional safety testing on a critical hinge mechanism as the cause for the initial delay. While these tests confirmed the component's strength, they required extra time to complete. "We did not want to rely solely on theoretical calculations, but to check in practice if the part can withstand all forces," explained Marijn Struyf of De Werkvennootschap. "That test went well and the part proved very strong, but it did cost us some extra time."

The installation of the mast and 14 support cables will necessitate a complete closure of the E40 highway for two weekends in the fall. Following this, final finishing work on and around the bridge, including asphalting and connections to the abutments, will take place. "A number of things still need to be done, such as asphalting on the bridge and connecting to the abutments," Struyf added.

If all proceeds as scheduled, cyclists will finally be able to use the new bridge on the F29 cycle highway by the end of the year. This project aims to significantly improve cycling infrastructure in the region.
