Hiker Reunited with Backpack Lost 63 Years Ago in Austrian Glacier

An 86-year-old hiker has been reunited with his backpack and other personal items, more than six decades after they were lost during a perilous mountaineering incident in Austria's Tyrol region. The belongings, preserved for over 60 years in glacial ice, were recently discovered due to the ongoing melting of the glaciers.

Last month, a hiker stumbled upon a backpack, an ice axe, a camera, and a pipe dating back to the 1950s or 1960s on the Sulztalferner glacier at an altitude of 9,700 feet. A police investigation ensued, and a barely legible name found on a weathered document folder eventually led to the identification of the original owner.

More than six decades later, the lost equipment has been returned to the man's family. Due to health reasons, he could not travel to collect the items himself. On August 25, a mountain police officer delivered the recovered belongings to his son. The son shared that the story of the lost backpack held profound significance for his family, symbolizing the man's survival and the continuation of their lineage.
